Southfield Gutter Install

Seamless gutters in Southfield

Seamless means the run is rolled out of a coil on your driveway to the length of your wall, so the only joints are at the corners and the outlets. Here is what it costs by the foot, and what a good one has to do.

A referral service for Southfield homeowners. An automated assistant answers; calls are recorded.

Typical cost: Seamless aluminum replacement, $6 – $12 per foot installed; $900 – $2,400 for a typical house (three Metro Detroit contractors’ posted 2026 ranges)

Five inch or six

The one size decision, and the only sourced number attached to it.

Five-inch K-style

A Metro Detroit contractor calls five-inch K-style the standard for most Metro Detroit homes (that contractor), and it is what the three figures per foot describe: $6 to $12 a foot installed (three posted ranges · 2 · 3).

Six-inch

More water per minute, and a wider trough for a roof with a lot of area draining to one corner. The only sourced step anywhere: $3 to $5 more per foot (national vendor, customer survey).

No Southfield or Michigan rule says which size your roof needs. If a contractor proposes six, ask them to say why, in writing.

What the state’s own standard asks for

Michigan’s housing agency publishes a rehabilitation standard for gutter work. It is the state’s document, not Detroit’s, so it applies here as written (the standard (PDF)):

  • K-style aluminum, not a patchwork — the standard calls for replacement rather than partial replacements.
  • Splash blocks where the downspout discharges.
  • The downspout outlet at least three feet out from the foundation.
  • Attic ventilation treated as part of the same job, which is the same thing the extension service says about ice dams.

The state’s adopted residential code adds the lot itself: it requires the ground to fall at least six inches within the first ten feet away from the foundation wall, and any paving within ten feet to slope at least two percent away (the code section; the city’s building department lists that edition as the one in effect — codes currently in effect). Neither document gives a downspout a required distance beyond the three feet above, and no Southfield page gives one.

What a 1969 house adds

The Census puts the median Southfield home at 1969 (the Census table). On a house that age the gutter may not be the oldest thing up there — the fascia board it hangs on has had hangers driven into it for decades, and water has been running behind it wherever the run pulled away.

That matters to the quote rather than to the gutter: while the old run is down is the only cheap moment to look at the wood. Ask the contractor to inspect the fascia and soffit with the gutter off, and to price any carpentry as its own line rather than folding it into the price per foot. Repair ranges, item by item.

Questions

Checked October 10, 2026

Does the contractor need a license for this?

Michigan lists gutters by name among the trades a maintenance and alteration license may cover, and the threshold is $600 of labor and materials (the state’s trade list). The city says the same thing in its own words (the city’s FAQ), and you can check any license yourself at the state license lookup.

Do I need a permit for seamless gutters?

No city page says. Gutters appear three times in the city’s permit paperwork — a $50 bond, and excluded from plan review twice — which puts the work inside the permit system without stating the requirement (the bond sheet · the fee ordinance). What the city does say, and the number to call.

Will I be charged for the visit?

Calling us costs nothing. Some contractors charge to come out or to get up on the roof. Ask before they come, and get the price in writing.
