Questions

Checked October 10, 2026

When can I call?

Any hour. An automated assistant takes your details, and you’ll hear back from a gutter contractor who serves Southfield or from us.

Do I need a permit to have gutters put on?

The city's website doesn't say. Its permit paperwork lists a $50 bond for roofs, gutters and siding, but nothing on gutter work alone. Ask the building department at 248-796-4100.

Where is my roof water supposed to go?

Into the storm drain, which in Southfield is a separate pipe from the sanitary sewer. Clean roof water is what it's for (the city's page).

Will gutter guards stop ice dams?

No. The state’s extension service says the underlying problem is attic heat — too little insulation or too little ventilation — and its article never mentions gutters at all (the article). New gutters and guards will not stop one.

Does the contractor have to be licensed?

Michigan licenses gutter work by name, and the city repeats the threshold in its own words: a contractor hired for more than $600 of labor and materials must hold a state license (the state’s trade list · the city’s FAQ). You can check any license yourself at the state license lookup.

Will I be charged for the visit?

Calling us costs nothing. Some contractors charge to come out or to get up on the roof. Ask before they come, and get the price in writing.
